Dear James was extremely thought provoking, imaginative and very well delivered. This one man show expertly took the audience on a ride through American History as seen through the eyes of a talented, educated and opinionated black man. So many emotions were activated and so much knowledge was creatively shared. And to have the phenomenal actor, Mr. Charles Reese, on screen embodying the spirit of the late great James Baldwin was absolutely incredible. The creator of the show, Anthony “Da Boogie Man” Rucker, has created a powerful, interactive, audiovisual experience that is not only amazing but also very necessary!...

The involvement of Charles Reese as the Spirit of James Baldwin adds authenticity and reverence to Baldwin’s iconic presence, while also giving the production a dynamic, engaging character. It’s clear that the creative team has thoughtfully approached the subject matter, with a strong focus on both entertainment and social impact....

Pain American Style... Perhaps the current age is the most challenging time for a black man to take a stage and tell it like it is - and always was. We have always had to find the space between Blues and Hymns in order just to reach the level of American Slave Art. All of that's Jazz - and oh so still necessary. The "saying it without saying it" still is news. It is not easy; therefore every voice is worthy. We are just beginning to deal with Baldwin....

DEAR JAMES is bold piece of writing, performing and technology that transport the audience members. Boogie's intimate world comes alive on stage, where we feel the pain of him giving up football as High Schooler because teammates reveal themselves to be raciest or the disappointment of having his doctoral thesis rejected because it makes the oppressors and their descendants feel uncomfortable. The production is as flawless and Boogie's acting. The audience literally engages with Boogie as he guides us and improvises his way through a one man play where his time and memories control everything in dream like state entertaining, thought provoking and a transcending theater experience....

This one man managed to fill the whole stage. He walked and talked and interacted with the audience. Even had a few dance moves and quick wardrobe changes. He challenged portions of my perspective on history and the way our choice of words can affect that perspective.
