Kuddos to the Director and Video-photographer whose images juxtaposed and highlighted the themes of the play. Boogie is a natural on stage, charismatic and personal. He’s writing is so powerful and raw, it is not until the audience member has time to reflect do they realize the truly mastering of his craft. The play is captivating at every turn.
What I didn't like
Honestly, I am saying this as a professional and audience member there does not seem like an obvious critique. The good thing about Boogie is he goes with the flow and is always changing, rearranging and making the experience better.
My overall impression
DEARJAMES is bold piece of writing, performing and technology that transport the audience members. Boogie’s intimate world comes alive on stage, where we feel the pain of him giving up football as High Schooler because teammates reveal themselves to be raciest or the disappointment of having his doctoral thesis rejected because it makes the oppressors and their descendants feel uncomfortable. The production is as flawless and Boogie’s acting. The audience literally engages with Boogie as he guides us and improvises his way through a one man play where his time and memories control everything in dream like state entertaining, thought provoking and a transcending theater experience.
