The Riot of the Tipsy Bacchanals is a play originally written by playwrights Cynthia Totten, Michael Hofacre, and Zoe Saba to be produced by Central Coast Shakespeare Festival in August and September of 2021. Due to COVID-19, the playwrights were constrained to a smaller cast than would usually be required of their theatre productions, and so they wrote an original play for five actors that would serve as essentially a “best of Shakespeare” compilation. Unlike other such plays, however, this play’s underlying story would feature existing Shakespearean characters, namely The Rude Mechanicals from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, who would be exploring Shakespeare’s texts while trying to find the proper play to perform before the Duke at his wedding feast.
Nearly two years later, the Artistic Committee of new non-profit Revelry Theatre Group, led by Cassidy Cagney and Jesse Baxter, sought a play to produce during their 2024 Season that was highly adaptable and required a very small cast. Having seen the original production of The Riot of the Tipsy Bacchanals by Central Coast Shakespeare Festival, a company that they had worked with previously, Cagney and Baxter had found the perfect fit for their season in the sincerity and humorous wit of the play. This production marks the Los Angeles debut of the play that originated in San Luis Obispo.
