I loved the simplicity of the performance. It did not require costumes, props, excessive noise. Valerie took us in and out of each scene, each character effortlessly. Her vocals were excellent and every word was heartfelt. She was funny, emotional… her engagement with the audience was BANANAS!! I enjoyed her interaction with us.
What I didn't like
Bigger space – more showings!
My overall impression
O M G EEEEE!!!
I don’t know where to begin… was it the co-parenting relationship between her parents and old time religion? The long suffering consequences inflicted by the parentals and sibling as a form of punishment instead of embracing her as the child she was and seeing that she made a mistake that resulted in a blessing but did not require her to become a 30 year old woman in a 16 year old body? Was it her screams?
Was it the moments of nostalgia that took me back to old school tambourine playing SUNDAYSBEST church or was it the Jheri Curl Juice DRIPPIN, pop lockin, Don’t Tell My Momma, Born and Raised in COMPTON 70’s vibes she BLESSED us with?? THISSTAGEPLAYISSSSWHATHASBEENMISSING!! It is a FULLREPRESENTATION of the BLACKCOMMUNITY yesterday and today!!
