This show was just great as it was thanks to the genuine authenticity of the artist himself*
My overall impression
Under the Radar, Over the Moon is a show full of heart. Harold Payne’s career as a Multi-platinum songwriter is notable for all the wonderful songs he wrote for such diverse artists as Rod Stewart, Pattie Labelle, Carlos Santana, Bobby Womack, Peter Paul & Mary and Snoop Dog to name only a few. But in this show, Harold himself shines too, maybe even more then he knows*
As a singer, songwriter and performer, his genuine presence draws you in, and feels like a great big hug. He just exudes warmth with a rare inclusivity for his audience, and clearly a deep passion and love for his craft. He himself, like his body of work, has the ability to make you care and share and align your awareness with what it means to be human.
His storytelling about the songs he wrote was interesting, fun, often funny too and always real, meaningful and poignant. He seems at home in everything he does. Whether doing improv such as making up songs on the spot, or sharing his experiences about the people he met along the way in pictures on a big screen behind him, he’s a unifying artist. And some members of musical groups he’s written for were in the audience and participated, like one of The Pointer Sisters.
This theatre show stood out unlike any other I know of right now, Heart felt and intimate and so refreshing in these times, I hope it keeps going, and stays a long while.
