What an interesting take on a historical event! I actually learned quite a bit since the stories portrayed were based on true events, and it sparked my curiosity to look up more information regarding them after the show was over. The actors played off each other well and there were some funny lines within the tragedy. I especially enjoyed Peanut’s character and his interactions with the rest of the cast.
I loved the use of the space. It was clever to have the upper area be the Ford Theater stage while the lower area was backstage, making it clear whether the actors were interacting backstage or performing the play within a play. The set was so well decorated. It really looked like the backstage area of an older theater. It was also a fun surprise to have characters enter or exit down the audience aisle sometimes, making it feel like they were really coming and going from the Ford Theater. The Civil War era costumes were the perfect final touch.
What I didn't like
A few times, it was hard for me to make out what characters were saying with their accents. Other than that, I just wish there was more! It’s definitely a show that could be expanded and I hope they’ll eventually be able to do that.
My overall impression
Our American Tragedy was a fascinating look at what was going on backstage during the Lincoln assassination. Filled with drama, and a dash of mystery regarding each character’s potential conspiracy with John Wilkes Booth, it was an intense well-acted ensemble piece. The brilliant use of the space, along with a wonderful set and costumes, made it feel like I’d traveled back in time.
