I liked the wild ride that was the improv show. We met quite a handful of quirky, famous, and/or unique characters who all had their own personas and foibles. I appreciated the use of the stage and the bold choices the performers made when it came to using their bodies to help tell the story. I also enjoyed the space in which the actors performed. The mood was set well with the lighting which helped immerse me.
What I didn't like
When it comes to the second half of the show, which is the original play Bitter Oats, I think it could benefit from a simpler, slower story. I enjoyed the heightening of the jokes with the three sisters and the quiet grandma’s selective “speeches.” But, it seemed like some other jokes didn’t land as well, unfortunately, perhaps due to the overall pace of the piece. With some fine tuning and a few more rehearsals, I’m sure this one act play can find its footing just fine!
My overall impression
I thought Masks was a fun, creative, and original way to perform improv! I thoroughly appreciated how the masks worn by the performers informed and inspired their respective characters. Luckily for us, we got to see how Batman, The Joker, and other important people in their lives live together and navigate some tumultuous relationships. The choice to also perform an original one-act play after the improv segment highlights Kegan’s artistry and that he is willing to take risks. And that is inspirational.
