This show was so weird in the best way. There were mombies (mom zombies), a cartoonishly evil capitalist villain, and a drill sergeant for breast feeding, among a cast packed with silly characters. The songs were hilarious, with A Thousand Boobs and People Pleasers being especially memorable. The accompanist was awesome and almost acted as a secondary character since she would sometimes react to things in the play. It was impressive how many different characters they were able to include in the show with simple costume changes. The mustachioed bodybuilder ex was a particular favorite of mine. I also loved the homemade vibe created from their crafty props and performance choices, like physically making sound effects during the fights. The main actress also did great reacting in the moment, such as when an actual child in the audience began to cry in the beginning of the show and she made it part of the act. Overall, it’s a unique show that is tons of fun!
What I didn't like
I wish some of the songs were longer! I quite enjoyed them and sometimes it felt like a song ended just as it started to hit its stride. Also, though it provided some comedic bits and a setup for the impossible expectations the main mother had to contend with, I could not understand why she was with her incompetent husband. Did she just settle? I rooted for her so much that it felt like a letdown for her to return triumphantly with milk and be greeted by a man who could barely take care of their other two while she was gone.
My overall impression
Low on Milk was an offbeat musical about a dystopian future where milk has been hoarded and is unavailable to the masses. Full of quirky musical numbers, it was so fun and you could tell that the cast really enjoyed playing around with it.
