What I liked
As I mentioned in the summary, a musical has to justify itself by making the songs tell the story. Otherwise, it’s a revue. So the author has to choose the right moments for the songs and the right things to say in each of them. I think every song in the show passes that test very well. Each seemed to be in the right place and to make sense of the story, yet each one was clever enough to be a little surprising.
What I didn't like
I think the show is catchy and funny and original enough to warrant a larger production. To make that happen, a few of the songs might warrant a little more length. And perhaps there’s a place for one “long” totally “serious” ballad midway. Where the comedy takes a break. (Am I forgetting one?)For variety and impact in a larger setting. A mother’s ballad to her baby? But these suggestions may be off. One might say “why mess with a good thing?”My overall impression
I thoroughly enjoyed this broad farcical show—one which like most good comedies has serious things to say amid all the fun. Things about how we behave in a societal crisis (allegorically a Zombie invasion), and the heroism expected of mothers when no one else accepts responsibility. And like all good musicals, it says them best through the well-timed, well-written musical numbers. That’s what I admired most. All the songs, while very funny, do exactly what they have to do in a good musical—they meaningfully advance the flow of the story and the underlying messages. And who can resist a song that says “I wish I had a thousand boobs?” It came early and the crowd was clearly grabbed for the rest of the show! The performances were a lot of fun, especially that of the author as the mother seeking milk. She lit up the stage. The show is real crowd pleaser and would do well in a larger, off-Broadway size theater! There would just be even more people laughing!
