What I liked
I loved that such a serious topic was peppered with humor.
Loved everyone’s performances. Carver Folkes performance of Stevie turned out to be most multi-dimensional for me & he knocked it out of the park. I went on a journey of emotions with his portrayal of Stevie starting with uncomfortable, to empathy to endearment.
Given the limitations of staging a play at FRINGE, this was very impressive. Kudos to the Director & their team.
What I didn't like
This is not an criticism, but when the play ended I wanted to watch a play just about the mother played by Suni M. Who is this WANA woman who allowed her daughter to go to Afghanistan with US Army. I would watch that play.
My overall impression
In an era dominated by reels and memes, where even the gravest matters become punchlines (Hello, WW3), returning to the theater after a few years felt like a breath of fresh air. And what a delightful reintroduction it was! Having sat through my fair share of plays about the Bush Era wars in my 20s, I walked in with a touch of cynicism. But that was swiftly replaced with awe as the performances unfolded. Each actor delivered a near-perfect portrayal, captivating the audience from start to finish. It was a reminder of the impact live theater can have, even in our meme-obsessed times.
