What I liked

The “essentials only” set and lighting design made the most of the intimate space in this black box production. It’s a bare bones production; Jordan Herskowitz’s laser-focused direction gives Legerski nothing to hide behind and she shines brighter because of it. Her inherent likability frequently bubbles to the surface, even in the most harrowing moments of her story. The balance tilts towards levity, with plenty of pop culture references and lovingly brutal barbs about Los Angeles culture.

What I didn't like

Perhaps because the material is so personal, and this is her first ever solo performance, there were a few moments in her story where Legerski seemed to be holding back. Particularly around the two “break-ups” which are central to her plot. She and her director have developed these characters with style and integrity, but when it comes time for the big confrontation with them, it is explained rather than performed. The explanation is effective, but left me wanting what Legerski is so clearly capable of: a messy, beautiful performance.

My overall impression

Elli Legerski arrives in her Fringe debut with all the hairflips, heartbreak, and hard honesty you could ask for. This is a delightful first attempt at solo performance, and one that many seasoned performers could learn from. The execution of this solo show, with its messy authenticity, simple set, and half-hour run time, understands the assignment at Hollywood Fringe. Go see this show. Be entertained by Legerski’s natural charisma and engaged by her perspective on relationships. If you don’t like it, you’re out of there in 35 minutes.
