This show is conceived to protect animals through the construct of smoke and mirrors. Like any good magician, Liz is an engaging storyteller. Though some of her sleight of hand was shaky, her commitment to being fully present with the audience made even the mishaps entertaining. We were guests at her party, and she hosted impeccably.
Speaking of party, Liz’s custom-made costume is eye candy, vegan, and alone worth the price of admission. The razzle dazzle power suit is in itself a commentary on antiquated female roles within the male dominant profession, and the artist sharply reclaims and owns the drag with aplomb.
What I didn't like
While Toonkel’s sleight of hand could use some finesse, her vulnerability, charisma, and cleverness more than make up for it. Present, real, and in the moment, it is refreshing to see a performer listen so intently under the burning spotlights.
From a dramaturgical stand point, I’m still grappling with the artist’s desire to save animals when an animalistic act was committed upon her, and how this latter story thread, which leads to a finale trick that is deeply meaningful and beautiful, fits into the original concept. Bottom line, I was thoroughly entertained, and while this show did not convert me to veganism, I’m closely considering Meatless Mondays.
My overall impression
Liz Toonkel is a magnetic, if not magical force. This is an artist who commands the space and holds the audience in the palm of her sometimes tremoring, sometimes adroit hands. Funny, entertaining, genuine, and chock full of spectacular eye-candy surprises!
