As a pretty jaded adult, I find it difficult to think up of stories that can tell a positive message about equality and friendship without being caught up about the conditions that continue to prevent such things from happening. So when I find a story that can unapologetically envision a utopic setting as well as convey how it can be possible, it’s hard not to be a bit inspired.
I was surprised by Baby Rock’s directing and how it visualizes “senses”. The music, visuals, dialogue, and set design all work together to create a child-like wonder as well as serve the broader theme of equality in an admittingly hoaky, but genuine manner.
I’d like to give extra kudos to the lead singer and actor who did an incredible job in bringing such an age-anachronistic character to life with her performance as well.
What I didn't like
The story didn’t need to be 45 minutes. The story is very sparse as it’s all about the singing and presentation over any beat-by-beat events taking place. As result, you’ll have a fun time but there’s a chunk that feels like the plot meanders and the point is already sort of made. It doesn’t make the story dull, but it did need a sooner wrap-up to make the message tighter.
My overall impression
A fantastic, all-ages play date with some surprisingly evocative storytelling and great musical talent.
