What I liked

Jackie’s comedic timing and character work bring each scene to life, piecing together a story of self-discovery from multiple points of view. And her skilled singing and songwriting abilities are on full display in the track list.

What I didn't like

The balance of the audio mixing could be improved in future showings, specifically during the musical numbers. Jackie’s live vocals were sometimes lost under the soundtrack, usually in her upper register.

My overall impression

Jackie brings an honest, playful, and at times self-deprecating history to life in this one-woman musical. Intimately personal, “Hold Me Down” examines trauma in its many forms and sees a young woman face it with vulnerability and humor-in-hindsight.

The show’s catchy tunes showcase her writing and vocal prowess, while her interaction with the audience and set design creates an intimate and relatable space for everyone. She invites us to learn, as she has, what the role BDSM and kink can play in our lives.

As the sole star, Jackie moves seamlessly from one character to another, creating a distinct voice for each that carries us through the story. There are splashes of comedy. There is risk-taking in the exploration of kink. And there are moments of reflection that will hold you in quiet suspense until the last breath.

Her honesty is what the theatre is made for.
