Space Quest: A New Musical

What I liked

The show has real broadway potential. From the first note to the final moment, i could see where this show is headed. It balances the tropes of the genre and being refreshing and original incredibly well.

The cast was incredibly solid through a majority of the show. Andromeda was as perfect of a leading lady as you could find. Pitch perfect, incredible acting, and so much heart and soul behind her performance. In a show full of strong performances; she soared.

Other standouts included the anxious apprentice character, solid musical theatre tenor voice – would have loved to hear him sing a bit more, as he had the strongest of the male voices and the least amount of singing, and the girl smuggler – great facial expressions and really funny comedic timing – they really lived in their roles.

Princess Morgana was HYSTERICAL, and boy could she belt it out when the score demanded it.

The book was very strong, something lacking in a lot of the other musicals i’ve seen at fringe this year. Lyrically the show was also strong, and the songs were incredibly catchy.

Puppets were quaint and silly. I loved the choice, the operators were so funny and had a great variety of voices.

I loved that, although the show was clearly designed to be a large musical spectacular, it’s still a lovely little story that works when stripped down to the barebones. The writing and the characters truly shined through the minimalism required of fringe.

What I didn't like

Some of the cast was clearly under the weather, a few vocal breaks even though it was clear those performers were well trained and vocally strong. it didn’t hinder my enjoyment of the production or diminish the quality of their performances.

a few sound issues where it was clear cast couldn’t hear music.

A few lines were lost due to lack of diction and projection from some performers.

Less of a critical thing, but i’m hopeful that this show will be produced on a larger stage with a large budget. It deserves it!

My overall impression

A lovable and infectious new musical with catchy songs, high energy, and a surprisingly touching resolution.
