The concept is incisive, smart, and an absolute gold mine for socially-minded humor. The actors are fully committed and deliver great performances. At 40 minutes, it’s brisk but still weighty, bursting with interesting ideas, and audiences are rewarded with a satisfying story arc.
What I didn't like
The team can continue to work on improving the balance and tonal shifts between the comedic and the more thoughtful, reflective storytelling. Using the sci-fi genre & the family story as a way to talk about race in America is an imaginative storytelling vehicle — but it feels as though the deeper, more resonant story could’ve been more thoughtfully woven into the fabric of the family’s narrative, at times.
My overall impression
BLACKS IN SPACE is a fantastically funny, thoughtful concept brought to life with passion, humor and heart, and anchored by poignant, winning performances.
