This show felt so personal and I loved it. By honing in on her specific emotional and cultural experience, she actually was able to connect more universally with the audience because it was so true to her. And wow, there were so many parts that were painfully relatable. Although I was practically laughing non-stop, this was also the show that has brought me the closest to tears. Christina brings us along on her emotional rollercoaster ride and I loved every minute of it.
As a performer, she is so expressive and has impeccable comedic timing. She had me constantly laughing with her commentary and I could feel her emotion all the way from the stage. Although she was talking to a whole crowd, at times it felt like she was specifically relaying her romantic woes to me. Watching I Hope You Heal was like listening to a good friend tell you about their dating life. It was emotional, at times viscerally so, and I particularly enjoyed the execution of Act III where she literally struggles against herself. Watching the entire rise and fall of a relationship allowed for an entire range of emotions to be explored. Thank you for sharing your vulnerability with us, Christina!
What I didn't like
I can’t think of anything specific right now. Maybe some people would find the third act jarring since it is the only one that breaks the conventions she has set up, but that’s why I liked it!
My overall impression
I Hope You Heal is a touching, hysterical look at one woman’s journey to love and self-acceptance through a turbulent unprecedented romantic relationship. I’d say this show is phenomenal, but I wouldn’t want to be a Davis! Truly though, it’s a brilliant piece and Christina is an incredibly captivating performer.
