From the opening moment to the final blackout,
Alina’s clowning skills kept me laughing out loud and grinning from ear to ear. She manages to be fearlessly over the top and ridiculous (in the best possible way) while remaining completely grounded. Like all great clowns, the humor is a cover for pain and vulnerability, and she is just as fearless in letting those moments shine through brilliantly.
Alina’s crowd-work is exceptional. I personally cringe at audience participation in shows, but she handled the moments of audience participation effortlessly, professionally, and joyfully to the point where I went from “Please, God, don’t let her call on me” to “Hey!! Call on ME!”
Nathan Mohebbi’s direction keeps everything on track and moving along smartly. What could have easily gone off the tracks, instead has a sharp focus and drive. There’s not one wasted moment in the show.
What I didn't like
The show works! It’s a perfect Fringe show. Fun, quick, quirky, and something you’re not going to see everywhere else.
If they continue with this (which I hope they do!) I’d love to see the story expanded a bit. Hook me with the story and then continue to surprise us with the clowning.
My overall impression
By integrating clowning with personal/autobiographical storytelling Alina and Nathan have elevated this beyond the usual solo show and have created something really special.
