This show was immensely relatable, even if not everyone has gone through the astonishing amount of grief Liza has had to deal with. She nailed all her songs, both lyrically and melodically, and displayed a great talent for connecting to her audience. During the show, I often felt like she was speaking just to me. I could easily see her being the front woman of a band… she has an amazing voice and a magnetic presence. Plus, that girl can rap! I loved that part. The band was also incredible and I’m glad they each got a little moment in the spotlight at curtain call to showcase their specific instrumental talents.
I was impressed with Liza’s use of the space. The projections filled the room so it felt very immersive and she frequently moved between the stage and the audience. I especially liked when she used a spinning chair and a vortex projection as an effect to show her traveling between different painful memories as part of her healing process. She also did a great job distinguishing between the superhero family characters through her mannerisms and different voices. I enjoyed the framing of the superhero story to portray her real-life mental health journey and it brought much needed moments of levity to the show.
The messages in this show are so important. It really resonated with me and I think it will help a lot of people. Thanks, Liza!
What I didn't like
Unfortunately, there was a microphone issue during the show and that sometimes made me miss some of her great lyrics or comedic bits. Liza handled it like a pro though. Other than that, the transition into her numbing song (weed, wine, and wieners!) confused me for a second coming so quickly after the revelation of the latest death in her family. But great show!
My overall impression
Supernova was an intense, emotional musical tackling mental health and trauma with such gentleness and grace. It was powerful to watch Liza’s performance and I loved that she was able to maintain hope throughout while not shying away from some deep and dark topics.
