The show travels between narrative, meta-narrative, meta-meta-narrative seamlessly, playing with the audience’s expectations without being confusing. The actors were incredible, performing both the role of actor and their actor’s role so well, and switching between them instantly.
Both humor and grief are so hard to write, often sounding forced or trite, but the writing in Lines feels fresh and true.
What I didn't like
I wish I knew a little more about the playwright before the final monologue. We hear bits and pieces as the playwright tries to find Jerry’s character, but I could’ve used earlier investment in her emotional journey
My overall impression
Lines is beautiful and unexpected. It’s serious — capturing the strange experience of grieving someone gradually, even before they’re gone — but still so funny.
