What I didn't like
I am not sure. I want this to be a larger piece. But I don’t know how to facilitate that.
My overall impression
Lily is such a beautiful writer. And now I know she is a fantastic performer too. Add to the mix, Simmy’s directorial chutzpah and you have a winner called, The Fairy who Cried Gems. Lily took three stories of desi childhood and transported them to a magic real setting complete with fairies, talking fishes, and an enchanted bakery. And together, we cried gems, baked some yummy desserts, and swam our way to a record number of aquatic glory. In other words, a rather fun evening in the theatre. But, Lily also understands desi politics, a little too well perhaps. And therefore, don’t think that this piece was just a fairy tale reminiscing bygone childhood. It deftly swam in and out of the political reality of being a South Asian young person in a way that only this new generation of bold desi voices can. Kudos!
