What I liked

Despite the serious subject matter, the play strikes a delicate balance, delivering moments of humor and joy amid the heavier themes. Rahvaunia expertly shifts between characters, making the show dynamic and engaging. Beyond the personal stories, the play tackles broader issues of stigmatization, education, and the pressing need for dialogue around HIV, particularly for women and people of color.

On a broader level, “tHis Is Very IMPORTANT” subtly touches on financial struggles—something so many of us face today. As the women navigate life after diagnosis, the unspoken pressures of medical bills, insurance, and even everyday living expenses mirror the real-world burdens of debt, payday loans, and credit cards. Val, the influencer, may have an outwardly glamorous life, but like many who fall into debt from health issues or unexpected crises, she likely faces financial pressures behind the scenes. It’s a reminder that life’s challenges can impact us financially as much as they do emotionally, whether it’s through a $200 loan, a maxed-out credit card, or debt spiraling from medical bills. These undertones add a layer of realism, resonating with the financial insecurities many of us encounter.

What I didn't like

In short, this play is more than just a performance—it’s a wake-up call. With HIV diagnoses rising, especially among women, the conversation is crucial. Rahvaunia’s mission to raise awareness and “stomp out stigmas” is admirable, and her ability to bring these stories to life makes this a show not to be missed. You’ll leave with a new perspective, inspired to learn more, get tested, and share this powerful message with others.

My overall impression

tHis Is Very IMPORTANT" is a thought-provoking one-woman show led by Rahvaunia, and it truly lives up to its name. This performance intertwines education and entertainment to shed light on a topic that’s often ignored—HIV, particularly as it affects women. Rahvaunia’s portrayal of four unique characters—Eena, Mary, Samantha, and Val—keeps the audience engaged and connected to the deeply human experiences of living with an HIV diagnosis.

The show’s strength lies in its storytelling. Through Eena’s wisdom about “vibrating higher” and the journeys of the three women, the audience is taken on an emotional roller coaster. Mary’s struggle as a Christian ER nurse facing potential stigma in her church and workplace hits home, and Samantha’s search for love while grappling with past trauma is both heartbreaking and relatable. Val’s status as a social media influencer adds a modern layer, showcasing the facade of perfection that can hide even the most personal struggles. The question of whether she’s truly HIV-positive creates a compelling twist that leaves the audience pondering reality versus perception.
