About the Project

Set in a black box with symbolic/minimalistic representations of New York/London, British Hong Kong and a tea plantation in Wuyishan (Fujian, China), Victoria navigates through a power struggle over one of the most valuable plots of land in China (and perhaps the world) – a seemingly humble tea garden with the oldest, consistently usable, prized tea trees in the world.

Whilst the men in her family (who hold the keys on paper) face off with Anglo-white businessmen who view her as both an exotic vehicle for sex and “housemaid”-wife material, men of color from other (Anglo-defined) races see her as a way to gain “proximity to whiteness”, white women consistently see her as “competition” in the male gaze, and the women in her life depend on her to pave a new path, Victoria is pushed to decide what the vision for her lineage, legacy and ancestry will become.

On the edge of losing her self, she discovers what exactly is in her power, and how the truth of it is so much greater than she ever thought it was.
