Krishna as Venice surf dude, Buddha as jolly sage, and Kali as powerful woman captured the essence of Yoga’s complexity. Opening with the cliched “Woga” class demonstrated many ambiguities and ambivalences, sparking in the audience a bit of a self-check-in. Although not explicit, the linkage between Standing Rock and Gandhi’s nonviolence movement rang loud and clear, as did the enduring apt critique of consumerism.
What I didn't like
The transition from the Standing Rock segment to the conclusion would benefit from one or two additional lines.
My overall impression
This spectacular dazzles, amazes, and inspires! Mayuri moves, transforms, dances, acts, imitates, chides, and challenges the audience to get real. By assessing her own positionality in the world of Yoga, both as a person of Indian descent and a socially engaged American, she reveals great truths about our collective notions of self.
