Uplifting and Affirming
A powerful message delivered in a clever, entertaining, attention-getting performance. Although the play's theme is the cultural appropriation of eastern yoga by western capitalism, it also speaks to universal truths of social justice, the conflict between spirituality and materialism, and how we understand gender roles in religion. We found the play to be both challenging and uplifting; challenging because it questions what we in the West perceive as the tenets of yoga. Uplifting because, in the end, it affirms we can all claim the highest aspirations of yoga, nonviolence, inner peace, respect for all life, and spiritual strength. We left the play physically and emotionally energized. A huge thank you to Mayuri for raising awareness. Tim & ...

I was, for the most part, unfamilar with the subject matter of this show. It was a fabulous performance with an interesting and truly thought provoking subject. One-pereson shows are a tough nut to crack for anyone, But Ms. Bhandari misxed dance, poetry, narrative, music into an exceptional one-of-kind theatrical experience....

Mayuri is such a presence. From the story to the dance, the audience was in good hands. An educational exploration of the capitalistic consumption of cultures. Such a great takeaway of the real meaning behind these ancient practices rather than the ones that are commodified. Through story, the audience becomes aware that they most likely didn't know the dilution of such a beautiful art and practice. ...

The Anti Yogi is a beautiful, heartfelt, powerful, at times hilarious takedown of Western appropriation of yoga. Mayuri Bhandari is a brilliant delight — and even though I am not from her culture, I related a lot to her love of her roots and her frustration with the commodification and whitewashing of those same roots. Beautiful work. Highly recommend!...
