THE ANTI "YOGI"

I had heard amazing things about this show, and it still exceeded my expectations. As a yoga student and ethically concerned human being, it connected with my feelings of rage and helplessness at the state of the yoga-industrial complex and larger world in a way I didn’t know was possible. I laughed and cried (literally), and somehow left feeling more hopeful than I have in a long time. The artistry is impeccable. Mayuri shows us her pain, humor, and passion in a way that makes the piece feel like the culmination of her artistic and spiritual journey (though, of course, in reality it only scratches the surface of her incredible life and talents). I believe Mayuri was telling a very personal story to the audience. It was so clear there was so much passion in her beliefs, and I also recieved the message that there is so much more about the ancient practice of Yoga in Mayuri's mind than an hour in Mayuri's unapologetic, significant, true presence can express. Brilliant concept and fantastic performance by Mayuri!
