I really enjoyed the conceit of the show. Many one person shows don’t have a strong or believable reason for existing. The concept of a taped message is really quite clever. And the constant referring back to it was also brilliant. The details in the props was delightful. The various phone conversations broken up across the show helped immensely to keep the pace clipping along and letting nothing get stale.
What I didn't like
There’s a bit about how instead of getting her daughter a trip to Europe, she got her a book instead. I get the joke intended, but it’s unrealistic that this wonderful mother would be so clueless about how inappropriate that comparison is that it stuck out. I would have preferred if the Europe trip being cancelled was because of money issues or something real or relatable. That’s it. Realism was sacrificed for the sake of a joke that didn’t stick the landing. A fairly minor script detail in an otherwise thoughtful show.
For an example, hanging a lantern on her mom’s super quick flights didn’t bother me at all, because it was tackled head-on.
My overall impression
Super sweet, incredibly well done, brilliantly conceived nugget of theater.
