I found myself close to tears for much of the show because I felt so seen and heard in the confusion and angst of Jean’s early adulthood, and I felt empowered along with her as she claimed and owned what she learned about herself. As an audience member, I felt like I was growing alongside her.
What I didn't like
This was brilliant. I would love to hear a Q&A with the audience for a future show so I can learn more about the behind the scenes process of making this show. Or even a cool workshop right before or after the show?
My overall impression
My Mother Doesn’t Know I’m Kinky is a fun and quirky show that brings you into a warm and comfortable hug of Jean’s inner world, whose struggles with discovering and accepting her own sexuality lends themselves to funny and touching scenes. While the subject matter, on the surface, could be intimidating and scary to some, Jean has a gentle touch with opening our eyes to a world that is more that just whips and chains – it’s a surprisingly wholesome gateway to intimacy and connection, things she has longed for her whole life.
