What I liked

Sam Labrecque’s charismatic presence is the most striking aspect of “SAM”. Her seamless blend of comedy, vulnerability, and musical talent draws the audience in from the first note. The meta elements—such as musical numbers that poke fun at the industry itself—are smart and self-aware, adding layers to the performance. The humor is sharp, with spontaneous and deeply crafted moments, showcasing Labrecque’s improvisation skills. I also appreciated the existential angle, which gave the show depth and made the story more than just a Hollywood satire; it’s about the universal search for identity and purpose.

What I didn't like

While “SAM” excels in its originality and humor, there are moments when the pacing could be tighter. Though clever, some of the existential and meta-commentary felt a bit repetitive toward the middle of the show. Streamlining a few scenes could maintain the momentum and keep the audience more consistently engaged. Additionally, while the comedy lands well, there were moments where the emotional beats could be developed further to provide a more balanced contrast to the humor. Adding a bit more depth to those introspective moments would strengthen the overall emotional impact of the show.

My overall impression

SAM” is a refreshingly original and witty musical that cleverly combines existential comedy with sharp satire on the entertainment industry. Sam Labrecque’s performance is both engaging and deeply personal, offering a raw and hilarious take on the struggles of navigating a “pre-successful” career in Hollywood. The blend of humor, meta-musical numbers, and reflective moments creates an entertaining yet thought-provoking experience. The show is as much about self-discovery as Pokerogue it is a commentary on showbiz culture, making it relatable for anyone who has faced uncertainty in their career or identity.
