Murder Blood Bear Story

lisa k. wyatt · June 27, 2015 certified reviewer
Murder Blood Bear Story is the rare one-person play that, while telling the stories of others, reveals more of the human core and spirit of the performer than a traditional solo show as confessional. Katelyn Schiller is a transcendent performer who is a true delight to witness and experience. You are in very capable hands as she leads you on a delightful and deep exploration happiness. Gloriously well done. Well-directed with a very conscious and resonant sound design. ... full review

The 7th Annual One-Man Show World Championships

lisa k. wyatt · June 27, 2015 certified reviewer
The 7th Annual One-Man Show World Championships is a zingy, pithy send-up of what can be the most self-absorbed art form of all time. The performers are all rock solid and hilarious. Darin Toonder as Trent "The Soul Mirror" Isaacs kills it. Jim Hanna drolly underplays Gary Tweeden in delightful counterpoint. Can't wait to see what these mightily talented folks come up with next.... full review

King of Kong: A Musical Parody

lisa k. wyatt · June 27, 2015 certified reviewer
Gloriously daffy and brilliantly performed, King of Kong is a marathon at sprint pace. The numbers capture the story whether or not you've seen the documentary. The duo are top notch, shifting styles and characters with ease. It is a giddy delight.... full review

Tiananmen Annie

From the moment you walk in the theatre and see the simple but elegantly evocative, highly functional set you know you're in good hands. Ann Starbuck delivers an endearing, honest and heartbreaking performance as she tells the tale of her year as a college student in China culminating in the Tiananmen Square Uprising. This is a beautifully structured piece. Tales from the Tiananmen Square Uprising are the bones. Lighter tales of her year leading up to it provide both comic relief and the buil... full review

Sleeping Around

Sleeping Around is a well-paced, entertaining and touching hour of theatre directed with a deft hand by Wendy Gough Soroka. The interlocking vignettes of Cesar Abella's engaging play explore the absurdity, joy and despair of emotional nudity. The ensemble does fine work but there are standouts. Eric Cire takes the juicy role of Elliot and wrings every drop from it with a mesmerizing performance. Jim Martyka, a seasoned actor confident in his craft, skillfully finds the humor and the wounded he... full review

Smile, Baby

Smile, Baby is a darkly comic, sometimes raucously hilarious series of interconnected sketches taking on the crap that women deal with on a daily basis. Sprightly paced, well-directed and solidly performed, it's an hour well spent.... full review

My Sister is an absolutely exquisite piece of theatre. Janet Schlapkohl has written a beautifully insightful and devastating play infused with humor and warmth. FUGITIVE SONGS

lisa k. wyatt · June 20, 2015 certified reviewer
There are some immensely talented actor/singers in this production. Reagan Osborne has a gorgeously effortless voice and infuses his performance with wit and verve. Katy Harvey lights up the stage whenever she enters and delivers a song with a voice like warm honey. Michael Noah Levine has fine comic timing and good pipes. A caveat: this is more of an emotional tone poem monologue concert than a musical. There is little character interaction or narrative through-line. The one instance of a tru... full review

Magnum Opus Theatre Presents

Magnum Opus Players Present The Yearbook is just flipping glorious! A sharp, crisp, clever production with comic actors at the top of their game. The staging is bare bones but inventive and clean as they accommodate the numerous sets of a screenplay on a black box stage seamlessly with no loss of comedic momentum. The cast is uniformly fantastic. The delightfully droll narrator, Thuston Eberhard Hillsboro-Smythe, pitch perfectly played by Brandon Clark is a delicious counterpoint to the manic... full review

TIMEHEART

lisa k. wyatt · June 19, 2015 certified reviewer
A riotously gleeful romp through time and space written and performed by a talented troupe that clearly understands musical structure and genre. From Kat Primeau's hauntingly beautiful first note as the titular Timeheart they capture the tone of old school sci-fi perfectly. The sheer joy of Chris Bramante's delightfully awkward and hopeful Bruce Greenstreet is infectious. Molly Dworsky sings some gorgeous numbers as Melody McMoon and has a sweet and tart chemistry with Greenstreet. The entire cas... full review
