The story of black women and their hair is sacred. It was a wonderful surprise to walk into the theatre and realize this was going to be a journey onstage one does not see. I loved having the Haitian Black Women perspective on coming to love and relish in our natural hair. It can be hard to break colonial ways of thinking and brainwashing and Ella sheds it all onstage. The more black women see our similarities the more powerful we are as a collective. Ella touched on old truths, history, cultural...

This is the work. To take Euripides age old classic and remind us that the story of Medea will never die. It lives because Yokko gave her body, gave her heart all to the work. To hear Medea speak from Yokko’s mouth took me to a space I did not expect. I believed she was an outsider, onstage alone. I saw her torment and love within the choreography that the monologue was an extra revelation. The power of stillness is real and hard to manifest onstage with poignancy. Yokko gives us a masterclass on...

There is something special about walking into a tiny theatre knowing you are about to see a new work created in the DIY style. This is how theatre magic manifests, in simple sets, props created by the actor, a body willing to walk into the unknown-on a non predictable physical journey is thrilling. This is what Fiona gives to her work, gives to her audience. All of herself. All of her fears. All of her excitement. The way her right hand shakes in a moment reveals we are seeing an indescribable ...

This is a play that quietly sneaks up on you. The dialogue fresh and natural starts to feel as though you’re secretly binging on your favorite tv show too late at night with popcorn. The cast of actors throw themselves into this beautiful play and your heart feels it for a long time after. Fort Huachuca is a specific military history unknown to quite a few, which is what makes this play by Sousa so very special. Sousa’s play takes the viewer into the lives of five African- American women who serv...

It is a play that demands discussion after and that is exactly what we did after the show. We had ice cream and talked about what it means to write such personal pieces---and then to have people perform those works--does it work? In reality, the question need not be answered--because all that matters is that it was done--so it lives. ...

A beautiful piece of theatre. Annie transported us to a powerful time in China where we got to meet humans who affected her and ultimately affected us too. The set design/music only added to an already beautiful show. A most necessary show for NY!...

Susan is enticing with a deep sense of self and power. There is a prowess about her onstage that is piercing and haunting yet moving as she reveals pieces of her life that make a full circle connection to what it means to exist. I'll say that I would have loved to see her glorious legs do some ballet on stage! This is a piece that deserves a continued life....
