The Werewolves of Hollywood Blvd: A Damnable Rock Musical

This is the kind of exciting new show that makes Fringe awesome. The music is excellent and the cast is comprised of heavy hitters from the LA musical/comedy cream of the crop. I'm hoping for a full production with a decent budget, but even as-is, it's an entertaining time.... full review

Indefinite Articles: A Libertarian Rage

Phillip Low's performance is more a biography of a person who discovers Libertarianism than a Libertarian primer. While peppered with clever in-jokes (although I was hoping for a "muh roads"), it's far more personal than the title suggests. I thought it was entertaining, even with a small audience. It's an intimate and emotionally raw piece with moments of humanity that transcend political affiliations.... full review

Natasha Mail Order Bride Escape to America: The Musical

I wrote a bitterly scathing review that I've decided to remove. I got the opportunity to chat with some of the cast at the closing night party, and I realized with horror how I completely failed to acknowledge the incredible effort brought to the piece by the performers. The piece is obviously a labor of love, and it's my own business not to enjoy it - not suitable for broadcast. Posting negative reviews at Fringe is unnecessarily reductive. While anyone producing challenging works under the s... full review

Leprechauns & Lies

After seeing Chad's teaser performance at Arty Party (and chatting with him at Fringe Central) I decided to give this a shot. I was surprised at the emotional depth of the piece, particularly the transition from lighthearted observational comedy to introspection on self-esteem issues and the weight of guilt. The piece explores thematically disconnected topics, but Chad's personality and endearing emotion connects the pieces for a cohesive event. Were it to continue development, I would like to s... full review

Mission To Mate

I'm not sure what this feeling is. Self-affirmation? Satisfaction? The peculiar opposite of paranoia, a pastorale equilibrium of "everything in its place?" I'm talking about the feeling of a celebrated iconoclast executing a precise and articulate demonstration of personal aesthetic. Placing the money where the mouth is. Or perhaps chips on a table? I'm rotten at metaphor. Colin Mitchell refuses to disappoint with a trilogy of scenes performed by two actors playing two agents who wear six diffe... full review

The Lights Are Off

I wrote a review for this on my tumblr blog: http://whywouldiseethat.tumblr.com/post/25140160111/thelightsareoff I've been delighted to see these folks at shows or at the Fringe Central Station nearly every night. It was enough to present one of my top five favorite shows (so far!) of this fringe, but I admire their participation and support for the community they've recently joined. Personally, I'm hoping somebody swoops in and arranges a full run.... full review

Four Clowns presents That Beautiful Laugh

I sat in a room almost completely full of complete strangers and loudly relished - with absolutely no self-censorship - the unbridled joy of childhood for an hour. I only wish I had a time machine to go back and catch my 7-year-old self's opinion of the performance, for as I discovered through regressing to him tonight: he had some pretty rad ideas about things. The company accomplished - with aplomb - the laughably simple yet monumentally difficult task of remaining present in every precious m... full review

If Water Were Present, It Would Be Called Drowning

This show wasn't my style, but I was so taken by the performance and richly integrated technical elements that I was on board for the duration. I don't precisely balk at Beckettian follies filtered through postfeminist ennui, especially as well-executed as this. I think perhaps the fact that this was not only a midnight show but the seventh I'd seen today had some effect on my judgement. Nonetheless, it is challenging, in all the right ways and for all the right reasons. You can expect a legitim... full review

Don't give up! This musical has a solid heart, and while assuredly in its adolescence, I feel it has strong merit. The striking issue to me is the lack of a clear concept. If this is a show about Samuel Clemens becoming Mark Twain, why is the most dramatic conflict in his life taking place several yards offstage? Why is the lead romantic couple two auxiliary characters? What are the consequences for the world of the show (the bar, the dancers, the clientele, etc) from Sam's transformation, and... full review

The Nina Variations

I like to read Chekhov's work as an elevated, loving satire; a pastiche culled from societal archetypes and peculiar lazzi performed by gathered folks as per propriety's dictate. Clearly, I'm no Chekhovian scholar (and never will be, my God, there's much wonderful junk on television), but I found it interesting that this piece more or less reflects that reading. I mean none of this to appear pejorative. The Nina Variations casts six incredibly attractive, young people giving Los Angeles Actor in... full review
