LEAR / LOMAN - The Best of INK @Fringe

corwin evans · June 23, 2019 certified reviewer
The echoes of characters from various plays dwell in purgatory, waiting to learn the lessons they had failed to while alive. What luck two men of wildly different stations chance upon each other, only to commiserate over their relationships with their children.... full review

Batter Up! My Brain on Baseball

corwin evans · June 22, 2019 certified reviewer
Half quiz show, half mentalist act, this ode to baseball fits the Fringe like a well-worn glove. Brett commands a supernatural knowledge of the sport. His abject delight in relating esoteric facts may stir even the most baseball-apathetic to appreciate America's pastime. I would call this piece a grand slam, so don't strike out or walk from this run.... full review

Transference

Ever go back for a second round with an ex? Try doing that a hundred times. Transference is a lighthearted romp through a dark past. In a single scene on a single set, two talented actors give us a peek at what it's like to never really get over the love of your life.... full review

Butcher Holler Here We Come!

corwin evans · June 21, 2019 certified reviewer
What an absolute rush. Heightened poetry drawn from miner colloquialisms crash against the weaponization of classic country music in a deeply uncomfortable piece. At times, I forgave myself for following the eyeline of the actors in seeing the barely-resolved dangers of the caved-in coal mine, staged in an otherwise unassuming dance studio at Thymele Arts. One wouldn't think the comfort of fluorescent lights and the promise of safety in relatively familiar circumstances would be so sorely missed,... full review

REVENGE OF THE ROOTBEER: The Sequel To Night Of The Rootbeer

corwin evans · June 20, 2019 certified reviewer
Since sitting down for the duration in the same room as this, I have been consumed with a powerful thirst. No liquid can quench, no substance may satisfy. I leave now to walk across the ocean floor to the wrecked schooners of my forebears, praying the pungent brine of the Atlantic will slate this thirst. Perhaps it is a lust for the open sea. Perhaps there was something in the Rootbeer.... full review

The Cave: A Folk Opera

corwin evans · June 20, 2014 certified reviewer
The Cave seems entirely at home in the back room of Three Clubs. Known for regular burlesque nights and a cultivated Byronic ambience (and clientele), the choice to stage a moody tone poem such as this felt effective. Certainly, the show as a whole is an excellent port of embarkation from which to sail the stormy seas of further development towards clarity and specificity. As is, the production - swimming in reverb - suffers from a conspicuous lack of credited sound design, choosing to area-mic p... full review

THE FANTASTICKS - the original fringe musical (1959)

corwin evans · June 20, 2014 certified reviewer
I've never seen the Fantasticks, so thanks to Good People Theatre Company for giving me a chance. At two hours run time, it's a beast for Fringe schedules, but I saw a pleasant crowd of all ages walk out with a smile on their face. Personally, I have negotiated a détente in my war against musical theatre, but tensions still run deep in the decades-long conflict. I do not enjoy much of the "classic musical" catalog, of which I think it is safe to include "The Fantasticks." While the actor-controll... full review

The Best of Craigslist: Live!

corwin evans · June 20, 2014 certified reviewer
People write damn foolish things on the ol' Craigslist. As a denizen of the Internet and a strong believer in the burgeoning array of experimental fiction coming from it - Amazon reviews, greentext, trolling, Tumblr escapades, ad infinitum - I see nothing wrong with themed shows that cull material from the great expanse of weird that lurks behind a billion computers. That said, it seems to be irresponsible to present a show as fact when some pieces seem too far-fetched to be an earnest offer. Con... full review

germaine

corwin evans · June 20, 2014 certified reviewer
Rachel Germaine offers an exuberant, high-energy glimpse into her Long Island upbringing, suffering under the hands of tyrannical brothers and her journey toward acceptance. Told with humor and razzle-dazzle, what could simply be an anti-bullying, coping with addiction or investigation into female coming-of-age braids all three threads in a common story informed by all these aspects. The result is an entertaining one-and-some-person show. I would have appreciated the clarity that comes from de... full review

A master class in comedic timing. Knowing nothing about Little Women or Girls, I still enjoyed this show immensely. Absolutely cannot be missed.... full review
