And the Beat Goes On: A Comedic Cabaret

shari barrett · August 05, 2021 certified reviewer
It's great to see just a normal person trying to make the best of her life. I guess I was expecting more of her life's journey as a nurse, but all she did was talk about what a prison it has been to her. While her journey to self-discovery was a bit of a mishmash of characters and stories, mostly heartbreaking ones at that, this solo show seemed a bit under-prepared. ... full review

3 Way Lovve

Thanks to expert online direction by Andrea Jacobs, cast members seemed to be interacting with each other as if in the same room while sharing glasses of wine or a cup of coffee, having sex, or when exchanging props which I will not give away in this review since it would reveal a major plot point that is better left as a surprise.... full review

Magic as Medium

Even as close as I was sitting, there was no way I could figure out how he was able to use sleight-of-hand skills to fool us so many times. How can he just shake a Rubik's Cube and have it automatically separate all the sides by color? How could he remember the exact order or cards in a desk after seeing them once after the entire deck was shuffled by the audience? How did a torn page from a book get into someone hand when it had just been in the book? Truly amazing and totally entertaining. ... full review

Five pieces of paper

This deeply moving and incredibly personal family story spoke directly to me since I am also a descendant of European European Jews who fled their homes in Poland and Russia and made their way to America to be sure their children and future generations would survive and have a better life. As Moti prepared his Grandmother's cake from ingredients in Mason jars, it reminded me of standing in my own Grandmother's kitchen watching her cook many of the specialties I watched her prepare with nary a mea... full review

PRETTY, WITTY NELL

What an eye-opening lesson into the life of Nell Gwynne, the English actress who is perhaps best known as the mistress of Charles II, whose frank recklessness, generosity, invariable good temper, ready wit, infectious high spirits, and amazing indiscretions that were popular in society as well as the King's Court - until he died and Puritanism set in. As performed by the "pretty and witty" Melanie Johnson, who manages to deliver writer/director Ryan J-W Smith's iambic pentameter monologue as if... full review

Shiva for Anne Frank

It's obvious from the start that Rachel grew up identifying with Anne Frank, as do many of us who read her book and tried to imagine what her life must have been like in those cramped quarters for two years, her teen years taken from her. Her heartfelt tales often resulted in tears, both from her and audience members deeply affected by her stories, projections, and bitter realities of how hard life can be. Most importantly, I walked away remembering "do not let grief rule your life," and that as... full review

Four Clowns Presents: Shakedown at the Dusty Spur!

What a entertaining show with a hero to cheer and villains to boo, all in the spirit of good clean fun. The ensuing rowdiness added to The Four Clowns style of playing so over-the-top that you cannot help but play along with them, especially when asked to "Remain Calm" through song.... full review

Scarlett Fever

Performed by an ensemble of 8 actors who work together perfectly to create a dream-like atmosphere exploring this Hollywood legend, the story unfolds in 10 moments incorporating constant and incredibly entertaining stylized movement, gesture work, dance, chant, song, original text, several suitcases, and an enormous Scarlett dress (created by Aaron Francis and Linda Muggeridge), all performed to a riveting drum beat thanks to musicians Kent Jenkins, Gordon Wimpress, Shih-Wei Carrasco-Wu, and John... full review

"I Wanna Be Evil: The Eartha Kitt Story"

From the moment Janelle Lynn Randall appeared at the top of the Studio C staircase, there was magic in the air as she descended with great style and bravado to share the life, music, and oversized personality of Eartha Kitt. As the writer, creator and executive producer of the Fringe 2019 show, it’s easy to realize you are watching an incredibly talented artist perform her dream role from start to finish! ... full review

Supportive White Parents

shari barrett · June 20, 2019 certified reviewer
Such a fun show with an excellent cast of performers who know how to milk a joke for all it is worth. This comedy about an Asian girl longing to follow her own dreams and not her parents succeeds due to its lead actress Joy Regullano who wrote the book and lyrics, and performs several songs on violin. I especially enjoyed her "Love Me For Who I Am" song and the comparison life she leads when her dream of having Supportive White Parents comes to fruition. The entire cast was thoroughly entertai... full review
