86-YEAR-OLD FORMER ACTIVIST WRITES AN ORIGINAL MUSICAL TO BRIDGE THE DIVISIONS OF THE 1960S AND TODAY IN HARMONY'S EDGE
Harmony's Edge
At an age when many people are reflecting on their past, Don Robertson, an 86-year-old former activist, professor, and lifelong believer in the power of music to inspire social change, has created an entirely new musical looking toward the future.
His original production, Harmony’s Edge, now playing at the Hollywood Fringe Festival, asks a timely question: Can music still bring people together during deeply divided times?
Set against the backdrop of the turbulent 1960s, Harmony’s Edge tells the story of a fictional folk-pop group whose message of hope, understanding, and harmony collides with a rapidly changing America. Performed as though the audience is attending one of the band’s concerts, the 71-minute production features an entirely original score written specifically by Robertson for the show.
Robertson conceived the project as a bridge between the political and cultural upheaval of the 1960s and the divisions facing America today. Rather than revisiting the era through nostalgia alone, the musical explores timeless themes of friendship, idealism, forgiveness, and the belief that people often have more in common than what divides them.
The creative team includes Shirley Robertson (co-creator and producer), Damon Robertson (Music Producer/Arranger), and David Vernon (Director), who has staged the production as an immersive theatrical concert performed by a youthful, energetic cast with minimal scenery and an emphasis on music and storytelling.
Early audiences have responded with enthusiasm, with many remarking that they “didn’t see it coming” and describing the production as an unexpectedly moving and uplifting experience.
At a festival featuring many quality productions, Harmony’s Edge offers something both original and familiar: the imagined story of a band that never existed yet somehow feels like part of America’s musical history.
