Part the seas of never-ending connectivity. Crawl out of the lions’ den of engagement bait. “The Church of Delete Your Account” wants you to be free from social media. This immersive theatrical experience premieres at the Hollywood Fringe Festival on Sunday, June 7.

Joe Lim, founder of the Floodify content distribution platform, recently told Vulture magazine that “90 percent of what you see on the internet is advertising in disguise.” In his first major teaching document, Pope Leo XIV said that AI must be “disarmed” in order to free it from the mentality of military, economic, and cognitive competition.

From stealth marketing campaigns that manufacture viral content, to political interests that shape narratives with comment manipulation, social media has us all in a death grip. In their 40-minute piece “The Church of Delete Your Account,” writer-performer Joey Schleps encourages audiences to deactivate, delete, and be free.

But it’s not a cult. It’s a calling.

Sibling Joey has been called by God — or maybe it was Amanda Seyfried in The Testament of Ann Lee — to save the world from the evil that is social media. This old-fashioned revival style performance will empower audiences with enough joy, humor, and love to break the shackles that bind them to the platforms that are stealing their souls.

“I’ve been writing this piece since the beginning of the year, and it feels like an urge I just have to get out of me,” Schleps says. “So I booked a theater and will be participating in the Hollywood Fringe Festival alongside 2,500 other plays!”

Delete Your Account is a body-positive, sex-positive, pro-queer, anti-racist, anti-fascist, non-denominational church. “The Church of Delete Your Account” at Hollywood Fringe Festival is produced by Annmarie Nye, with writing consultation by Meredith Hackman, music by Bailey Godfrey, and audio interludes by Computer City Productions. Also, the performance features one photographic image of a butt.
