Someone was listening.
Someone always was.

Gangbusters Theatre Company brings Black Bag Job to Hollywood Fringe Festival 2026
LOS ANGELES — April 3, 1968. Memphis, Tennessee. In a sealed FBI surveillance room, four
agents work a night shift that will end in history. They don’t know that yet. They’re just doing
their jobs.

Black Bag Job, the fourth installment in playwright-director Christian Levatino’s ongoing
Black Bag Hexalogy, makes its world premiere at the Hollywood Fringe Festival this June at the
Broadwater Black Box. Taut, claustrophobic, and relentlessly precise, the play unfolds inside a
government surveillance operation on the night before Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s
assassination — asking not who pulled the trigger, but who listened, who rationalized, and who
said nothing.

“This is a play about the machinery of power,” says Levatino. “Not the men at the top —
the men in the room. The ones who make it possible by showing up.”

“With one foot in historic journalism and the other in audacious storytelling, Levatino —
deftly balancing humor and shock — gives us high-powered, testosterone-fueled,
investigative theater with meaty roles for adventurous souls.”

— Tony Frankel, Stage and Cinema

Black Bag Job is the latest chapter in Gangbusters’ decade-long theatrical investigation of
American institutional violence. The Hexalogy spans 1954 to 1972 — from the McCarthy-era
origins of the surveillance state to the Watergate break-in — six plays built from what the official
record left out. Previous installments include Sunny Afternoon (Lee Harvey Oswald’s
interrogation), King Dick (Elvis meets Nixon), and …meantime at HoJo’s (Watergate).

Six plays. Five cities. Four presidents. Three assassinations. Two surveillance agencies.
One nation unraveling.
