FROM LAPDANCE TO SUNDANCE: THE RISE OF CORINA CALDERON
‘Suicide Star’ Actress Will Star In Live Show Based On Her Own Journey To Hollywood
‘All She Can’ and ‘End of Watch’ actress Corina Calderon will star in, ‘Corina: From Lapdance to Sundance,’ a live adaptation of a short story about her childhood and unorthodox journey to Hollywood. The story recounts a true tale of immense grit and perseverance when a young stripper in Texas is cast as the main lead of a motion picture that garners a Grand Jury Prize nomination at the Sundance Film Festival.
Written and performed by Calderon and directed by Jessica Lynn Johnson, the one-woman show illustrates the dichotomy of finding purpose as a young actress during the day, while moonlighting as an exotic dancer in the evenings for sustenance and to save enough money to ultimately move to Los Angeles. With the support of fellow dancers from her nightlife trade while hiding her profession from her Mexican-American Catholic family, the show retells her tough upbringing, passion for acting, and newfound confidence as a millenial, Latinx woman in contemporary America.
Calderon plays ‘Mia,’ an intelligent, strong, and appealing young woman from a tough and traditional household who is stunned when she lands the lead role in a motion picture about a poor community in Texas where high school students’ aspirations of leaving their humble beginnings in search of the American dream mirrors her own life. As the film garners critical accolades and its lead star gains substantial recognition across the film festival circuit and Hollywood, she does her best to enjoy her newfound success while dealing with an array of deep, personal challenges back home.
‘Corina: From Lapdance To Sundance’ will premiere at The Lounge Theatre in Hollywood as part of The Hollywood Fringe Festival, on June 9th, 2019, with additional dates on June 15th and June 20th.
Calderon most recently played the female lead opposite Emmy-Award nominated actor Richard Cabral in crime-drama, ‘Khali The Killer’ for Millennium Films. She has played Supporting roles in DC/Warner Bros.’ ‘Suicide Squad’ opposite Jay Hernandez and David Ayer’s ‘End Of Watch’ opposite Maurice Compte, Michael Peña, and Jake Gyllenhaal.
She is repped by Rafterman Media, Greene & Associates, and Felker Toczek Suddleson Abramson.
