Fugly Productions and Angry Alice present Katie Molinaro’s one-woman punk-cabaret musical-performance, On the Rag to Riches, at iO West as a part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival, June 15th to 23rd.
In On the Rag to Riches, every relationship Janey has ends before it begins, and she is finally ready to try to figure out what made everything go wrong. Was it her first kiss, or was it the book her mom made her read explaining how her body works? Or maybe there is just no time for a relationship with the impending zombie apocalypse. She may never know.
On the Rag to Riches earned “Best Solo Performance” at the 2011 Capital Fringe Festival. “Never in my life have I seen a woman so daring, and so hilarious… this is a show you cannot miss.” -Julia Exline of MD Theatre Guide. “The show… feels like a concert, but plays like a storytelling performance in need of Ritalin. And that’s a good thing,” -Derek Hills of the Washington Citypaper.
Fugly Productions, a New York-based production company committed to non-traditional musicals, has produced several pieces for the New York Musical Festival, and Off-Off Broadway at the Tank and Chashama. This is their first foray into Los Angeles. Angry Alice formed with the mission of showcasing women in roles that are not all sugar and spice and everything nice.
Molinaro, a recent transplant to Los Angeles, has done background work as “that hot dorky teen”, is scheduled to appear in Michael Bonomo’s short film Assassins this summer, and she is currently training with The Groundlings. Northrip, a recent transplant back out of Los Angeles, is best known for his punk musical version of Titus Andronicus, but has also written a half-dozen or so other infectious rock musicals. His only L.A. credit is a brief appearance in an episode of Sacred Fools’ Serial Killers.
The show features musicians Dana Wells on bass, Veronica Hunt on guitar, and Danielle Ray on drums.
