There is some really good material in LOVES ADVENTURES. The script is solid, Esther Mira and Faith Kearns in particular did a good job with the language and archetypal characters. But the choice of an 80's theme was muddy and made no sense to me - I'm not a proponent of needing classics to stay in period, but nothing felt "80's" about it except for the clothes and the music choices. This resulted in a "relaxed" and sometimes sloppy "modern" feel to the work, though the language demanded diction and heightened style. I understand that this was intended to have some connection to "the evolution of social attitudes" but it fell flat for me. A surprising show with a great story, a definite 80's vibe with Elizabethan English - a winning combination. See our full review at Indie Voice Blog...

What was the stand out for me was to see a rework of a classic play with a diverse ethnic and gender actors. So refreshing. Also to see the lead characters were strong independent women; more of that please.
Easy to follow and humorous it was great to see those 80's references. ...

I love when a show can inspire you to do more research after the show. During curtain call, I got so excited to get to research Margaret Cavendish. Really fun show, if you like the silliness/gender bending/love-story of Twelfth Night meets feminist exploration of classic material, you'll love this! ...

A fantastic retelling, and a damn fine reminder to men everywhere that women are not to be trifled with. Everything moved along at a sharp pace without losing any of the refinement of the language. A standout performance by Chineze Enekwechi had me laughing at almost every line, but really the entire cast was wonderful, and the direction was spot on. ...

A nice spin on an old classic I was not familiar with until seeing. It feels fun and fresh despite the play being hundreds of years old and you can literally feel how much fun the cast and audience is having with all of the situational comedy. Brisk, funny, endearing and touching it's got a nice little mix of everything you'd want from a play of this kind....

Delightful! Loves Adventures is a beautifully-conceived Restoration comedy: in Hollywood shorthand, an “18th-Century Rom Com”. Or in this case, an 18th Century Feminist Romcom. Broads Words is a passionate company who have staged the lesser-known work of Margaret Cavendish, giving important exposure to the voice of a female playwright from the Restoration era, deftly cutting longer scenes into bite-sized chunks.
Restoration Comedy was partly inspired by the idea of ‘Social Contracts’ coming out of the French Revolution - the concept that we get into relationships (love, sex, marriage) but on a deeper level there is a contract between two people - e.g. the man will care for the wife, protect her and support her.
