God of Abraham

God of Abraham combines the best, most hilarious, elements of live theater with a deeply compelling and honest tone. I had so much fun. GOA is one of a kind, and more enjoyable than anything (live or otherwise) I've seen in a long time. Do yourself a favor and go to this show.... full review

As the son of a Judaica teacher with more religious hangups than there are commandments in The Torah, I found God of Abraham to seamlessly alternate between hysterically funny, breathtakingly beautiful, surprisingly poignant, and absolutely terrifying. I intentionally stayed away from reviews and synopses, and I'm glad I did. Nothing could have prepared me for such a unique theatrical experience. The only way I could describe God of Abraham would be by trying to imagine David Lynch directing an episode of South Park. This show is hilarious, moving, thought-provoking and achingly human. Though comprised of various theatrical moments, using seemingly every aspect of the stage, this show manages to transcend any kind of "sketch" label, slyly getting at things most of us would prefer not to look at, including why sacrifice can be meaningless, why there may be a vengeful God, and how to make sense of the spiritual (or lack thereof) in everyday life. I really enjoyed God of Abraham, mostly for the integrity and talent of the performers. You're clearly in good hands with these five, so the zaniness and intensity of the journey you're on with them feels intriguing rather than obnoxious, as more experimental pieces can sometimes become. GOA is definitely avant-garde, but truly engaging throughout, and it makes its rather provocative point in a number of memorable ways that I continued to think about for the hours afterwards. I don't know that I ultimately agree with the message of God of Abraham, but I appreciated that the message was there, and delivered so gracefully. GO SEE THIS SHOW! It is, by far, the best show at Fringe I've seen yet. Abraham is a beautiful, innovative, poignant, and hilarious piece of work. I don't want to give anything away by writing about specifics but this show is on point. They seamlessly flow from one emotion to the next by pulling your heart strings and hitting your funny bone. This group of actors/creators are brilliant and I can only hope to see more wonderful work to come.... full review

A couple reviewers said "this is not a show for the religious" or "not for the faint of heart or Catholics", but as a Catholic, and eternal student of ancient languages and theology, who celebrates many religions, I disagree. Sure, there are always people out there waiting to be offended- but, since I'm religious, I love religious topics! People need to take more risks like this, with the material they used, and the hilarious humor. I laughed more during this show than in any play or movie I can recall in recent memory- sometimes out of a skit being hysterical, and sometimes my laughs were a tsking "huhm" when recognizing what the show was trying to point out- something not funny but moving, those old familiar problems that occur in religion... full review

THIS IS WHAT FRINGE IS ABOUT. This show is the fringAY! Kinda weird, kinda amazing, you'll laugh out loud and be pressed to think hard about religion and life in the next. I guess technically a sketch show, it seems so much braver and real. The performances are all stand out, and I might have secured a Jesus headshot to take home!... full review

A GREAT RIDE: Multimedia at its most diverse and unexpected: widely varying and varyingly-paced MM vignettes had the audience concerned, or brooding, or laughing until tears came down our cheeks. Some genuinely gifted casting and performances. Think of this as a rollercoaster: after a careful and comparitively deliberate beginning, hold on for steep elevations, crushing descents, and neck-yanking turns. (I had thought, in my misread of the description, that this would focus on Judaism, but the Abrahamaic fabric is extended and inclusive: mercifully, Buddism and Hinduism have escaped.)
