What I liked

It’s a rare pleasure to find a historical story with a broad and timeless perspective on human nature. The play addresses themes like the ethics of compromise, the true nature of civilization, and the dangerous lure of vengeance. It’s extremely satisfying from start to conclusion, even if we know how the tale ends. Apart from the odd anachronistic turn of phrase, the story effectively evokes the language of the time — sometimes literally, as actors shift into a Celtic dialect to show the perspectives of the Roman invaders.

The staging pushes the boundaries of what seems possible at Fringe, with visceral onstage battles, sieges, animal and human sacrifices, and a fantastic hair-raising communion with the war god Andraste. The action is effectively suggested through symbolic blocking or dance where it can’t be literally depicted. The dedication of the cast and intensity of performances will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Musical underscore is excellent, provided by composed tracks and an onstage percussionist.

What I didn't like

Because the production aims so high, it sometimes feels stretched thin in its resources.

My overall impression

A gripping historical drama about the power and hazards of revenge, staged with tremendous ambition.
