What I liked

Tony is such a likeable character in Homeless Romantic that it’s incredibly easy to feel at ease when he’s talking to the audience, even when what he is saying is jarring, intense, hilarious and, quite often, heartbreaking. He leads us through the tapestry of his life without sugar-coating it; shit’s fucked up, and he doesn’t shy away from letting us know exactly why it is.

Tony’s investigation into the streets, buses and downtown metro stations of LA removes the glitz and the glamour of “Los Angeles”, Hollywood, organic grocery stores, hashtag influencers; arguably portraying the most human recollection of living in Los Angeles that I’ve ever heard. That the city is beautiful even in it’s most dangerous of places; and that humanity is always found, even in the dodgiest of places.

There’s a real vulnerability in being able to laugh about truly devastating things that happened in your life, and Homeless Romantic is just that; complete with themed hats for every bit of the show and a tub of cold instant noodles. Tony deserves the world, and I’m so very grateful I got to see this show.
