Kyla Garcia's exuberence and energy palpably fill the space in this one woman show about a young woman coming of age in love. Through fairy godmother plot devices, dance, and structured scenes, she takes us through the late teens and early twenties of a woman's navigation through high school and college, the two great loves of her young life, and the writing that holds her together. What the piece lacks in structure and production is made up for in enthusiasm, for it is the actress herself that we are charmed by. ... full review

I witnessed Kyla win hands down the Hollywood Monologue Slam so I was aware of her raw versatility. Last night was unforgettable. I have never in my life witnessed such a bold actress take so much from her own life and incorporate it into such an amazing story so that others can have the courage to take on their "realms of fear" and fly living to the fullest. She is clearly an incredible asset in Entertainment, but more importantly a beautiful reminder to the world we are here for one another. Grateful to have such powerful inspiration in my life. Can't wait to see what she has in store next. ... full review

Kyla Garcia's The Mermaid Who Learned To Fly is a one-woman show that’s part autobiography, part fairy tale and part performance art. It tells the tail (sic) of Victoria Valentin, a starry eyed dreamer who yearns to be a writer. Garcia, who both writes and performs, is a delight. As she reenacts scenes from her past, characters she met along the way come to life: a brash but insightful New Jersey psychic; a not-so-insightful therapist; and even both of her lovers. Garcia's comic timing is flawless, as are her acting chops. Her mother’s grief becomes as palpable as the tears steaming down her face. Victoria’s story is co-narrated by her Fairy, whose “heartbeat is tied to one human dreamer.” What her fairy encourages us to shout out mid-perfor... full review

Kyla Garcia captivated me, not only as an outstanding actress, writer and performer, but more over as a phenomenal woman! The Mermaid Who Learned How To Fly showcases Kyla's exceptional talent, but what really drew me to Kyla was her energy and enthusaism when I met her at another actor's show. Her support and wholehearted goodness is profoundly evident when you are in her presence. I AM....inJOY for being a witness to all her gifts! Juli K. from Boca Raton, FL ... full review

Full of personal truths and perspectives of a dozen characters, all played with the love they require, The Mermaid Who Learned How to Fly has just enough magic to intrigue without suggesting that this is anything but our world.
