Office Beat - A Tap Dance Comedy

The Joy of Rebellion. It's nice to be reminded in this day and age that there can be exuberance and enthusiasm in resistance - that we truly are Stronger Together when we stand for what we love and believe in. The good people at Tap Overload are doing it all right. They're doing what they love at an untouchable skill level. They're inviting newcomers to be part of the fun. They're fostering young talent. This is much more than one show - this is a philosophy about life through dance.... full review

Sleeping Around

Masterful storytelling, skillful acting, all set around the ways we crash into one another emotionally - genitals first. Sleeping Around is a slice of modern life that showcases the stories that 10 characters tell themselves and others. I say "stories" because they're not lies, neither are they truths. They're the things we tell ourselves that allow us to sleep at night feeling that we are "good people". That we have been honest, that we have been patient, that we have been forgiving, that we ... full review

Clybourne Park

This staged reading of a two-act play is awkwardly executed. I went in not realizing that this would be a staged reading - when I went back to their promotional materials, and to the fringe website, I didn't see that anywhere. The actors perform with scripts in hand, and minimal props and costumes. Despite it being a staged reading, there is some (rather unfocused) blocking involved, including one of the lead actresses having her back directly to the audience at one point. I only saw ... full review

The Video Games

If you're a theatre purist - avoid this show. Also, go soak your head. Theatre at its best mirrors and elevates the world around it. So unless you've been living under a rock with your eyes shut and your fingers in your ears, video games are part of our cultural landscape, and are not going away anytime soon. This show will not hold your hand - if you're not a gamer, there are references that you won't get. If you're not familiar with the Hunger Games (or Battle Royale), you won't underst... full review

An Exploration of Gender Expression - Taming of the Shrew

levanna atkinson-williams · June 19, 2015 uncertified reviewer
The clothes make the man...right? Not in Queer Classics Padua they don't. In the world of the play, clothes are superfluous things that are donned, shed and traded with impunity. In this production clothing is simply a stand-in for the social construct of gender. When what we choose to cloak ourselves in is secondary to who we are, we are forced to reveal our character through our choices, our actions. Character as a quality is revealed through physical choices, vocal quality, and how and... full review

Thenardiers Inn - A Les Miserables Cabaret

This is not Les Mis. This is the show that every regional, touring, and Broadway performance of Les Mis wishes it were. This isn't a show, it's an EXPERIENCE. Why isn't Les Mis done this way? Without children, With drinks, and joyfully disregarding personal space. Tearing down the fourth wall and playing in the rubble, this cast of monster talents wreaks gleeful havoc with everything you love, and everything you love to hate about Les Mis. They can sing, they can dance, they can act, they c... full review

TIMEHEART

Pure exuberance - the cast and crew of TIMEHEART are clearly having a ball onstage. It's worth it to see a group who are clearly close collaborators working together on something fun and new. The energy of the performers makes up for some muddy storytelling, and find a seat close to center to avoid an imbalanced sound mix. I'd love to see more of their improv.... full review
