What I liked
I don’t even know where to start! I’m a huge fan of Doyle’s Sherlock stories. The way Miles-Thomas pulled emotion from the text/script (which is excellent) to portray a man who has deep feelings while at the same time knowing his struggle to express them was astonishing. MT’s command of different characters who had vastly different accents/body language was a delight; you clearly knew when he jumped in and out of someone who was not Sherlock. As for the text/script, it/MT was wonderful pulling out the nuances another actor may have ignored or let fall flat. I loved how he as Sherlock struggled to describe stuff as Watson would have…he was trying to respect/pay tribute to his dearest friend, but his inability to do so frustrated him. All Baker Street Irregulars should be required to see this show! But! I appreciated how this show is accessible to casual Sherlock Holmes fans. You don’t need to be a Holmes Book Geek to Get It and enjoy this play. If your primary knowledge of Holmes comes from the wildly popular tv Sherlock, you may appreciate a view of the character largely informed from the classic texts. (I don’t know if that makes sense. I hope it does.) The ending touched my heart hard. Luckily it was dark and nobody saw me tearing up.
What I didn't like
The only nit I had was the smoking jacket. I didn’t like the color or the length of the jacket. But you know if your only complaint is the costume? Everything else is fine!
My overall impression
An excellent — and surprisingly moving — exploration of the thoughts and of Holmes during some of the “greatest hits” that Watson put out in the world, which he / Doyle never shared. We know Holmes’ actions during those recorded events, and now we know the feelings of the man who claims to have none experienced.
