I love the way Miyo engages with the audience in such a direct and friendly way. The use of the slide projector was effective and added another dimension to all Miyo shared, enhancing my understanding of the cultural ideas she expressed, and adding another layer to each sly joke.
What I didn't like
I don’t think the show needs any improvement. However, it might be fun to see if noticeable lighting changes for each story might help deepen or highlight each story’s mood.
My overall impression
Miyo Yamauchi is a delightful storyteller who gives an audience so much. How To be Japanese is funny, poignant, and thought-provoking. It not only taught me about Japanese culture, but helped me get a new perspective on American culture through that lens.
