What I liked

Each performer leans in to a particular performing “superpower” that makes the show extremely dynamic. Tanya’s stage presence is so powerful and charismatic which creates this triumphant quality in her story of motherhood. Sharmita is at near maximum levels of endearing, which makes her story of adolescent self-discovery so charming and captivating. Sapna’s controlled tone has an honestly to it that allows her to present extremely heavy subject matter with comedy and a stoic realness. Chhaya conveys such a depth of vulnerability through her eyes and physicality that aids her spoken word poetry in cutting straight to your heart. I truly loved the show.

My overall impression

The cast members of “Yoni Ki Kahaniya” are not only incredibly talented, magnetic and charming, but what Tanya, Chhaya, Sharmita, Sapna, and Vee have created here is, in my opinion, a tribute to the alchemical power of sisterhood. And it’s badass.

Watching each of these four South Asian women spill the most vulnerable and intimate stories you can imagine out onto the floor of a crowded theater while their sisters support them through small choreographed vignettes left such a lasting impression on me. It made me reflect on the community I keep, and stood as a testament to the importance of supporting/protecting each other to allow us the space to explore who we are and what we feel has shaped us.

Through a multitude of talents including stand-up, spoken word poetry, and dance, these performers created one of the most impactful shows I’ve seen at the Hollywood Fringe Festival and I sincerely hope this story does not end here. Bravo.
