What I liked
There is a clear sense of each character’s individuality – not one of them felt boxed into any sort of stereotype or preconception about their background. The lighting was beautiful and added sooo much to the ambiance and tone of the space – there were some really nice moments in the writing that resonated and felt universal, as well as nice moments of comedy tucked between the folds of the plot :) Also! I loved the fluidity between english and languages from each character’s personal backgrounds, I really didn’t mind that I couldn’t understand what they were saying because I understood it wasn’t for me; it was meant for the people on the receiving end of the phone call, or for connection between characters of similar backgrounds. It established for me a connection that I didn’t feel I needed to be included in, and that was pretty beautiful to observe.
What I didn't like
I just felt like I wanted to hear more about each character’s backgrounds :/ There was a really nice moment where two characters talked about what they wanted to be when they were little, their backgrounds, etc. I was hoping there would be more delving into those kinds of inner conflict rather than focusing on the plot conflicts
My overall impression
It is so so wonderful to see a show with such a wide array of personalities and backgrounds across the asian diaspora! There is so clearly so much love and earnest urgency poured into this show, I’m glad to have seen it!
