What I liked

This show is reminiscent of classic Commedia/Clown lazzi performance art- think everything you love about bold physical theatre- but showcases this endearing character in an intimate and immersive setting, making everyone a part of something that feels both completely improvised and meticulously rehearsed. The blend in the performance of Twirly’s impressive skills/talents and her fears/foibles is so endearing and relatable, she really does echo the human experience in a heightened way to help us all feel a little less ridiculous, and more proud to be our unique selves, just like Twirly.

What I didn't like

I think this performance could only be improved by adding more shows so that more people can have a chance to see it! The audience is an active participant throughout the whole play, which is SUCH a delight for a theatregoer. We got to sing with her, laugh with her, try new things with her, even snack with her. Twirly could take this show on the road and change the clowning world- and she should- so get yourself a ticket so you can say you were a part of her triumphant debut!

My overall impression

Twirly’s Traveling Tricks is a theatrical force that needs to be experienced by anyone who loves to see raw talent and bold new work onstage. This show encapsulates everything that is great about Fringe theatre- it’s funny, it’s fresh, it’s groundbreaking, it’s unique and immersive, it’s short and sweet but filled to the brim with wonder and surprise. Twirly is the kind of classic comedienne who can read her audience’s reactions and delve into the depths of her collaborative creation. I was chosen to go up onstage with her, and although I often shy away from audience participation, I felt completely safe and inspired when she pulled me up in front of the crowd, because Dana (Twirly) fostered an intimate community based clowning experience from the moment she stepped onstage. Without giving away too much, I’ll tell you that Twirly the Clown brings major catharsis to her audiences as they watch her struggle with her need for validation and triumph over her shortcomings. I have never been so proud of someone for putting on their shoes- and the small victories and MAJOR moments of collaborative entertainment that Twirly gifted to us made everyone who witnessed her show a little braver, a little stronger, and a little sillier. Twirly lets us laugh with her, at her, and at ourselves, and is a breath of fresh air in the theatre world. DO NOT MISS THIS EXPERIENCE- I’ve seen a lot of LA theatre, and this is by far one of the best shows, fringe or professional, that I have seen!
